[WCODP ACT] – Coordination Calls: August and September 2016

The WCODP ACT had their monthly coordination calls on August 2nd and September 20, 2016.   The group is focused on preparing for the upcoming meetings for the West Coast Regional Planning Body (RPB) and the West Coast Ocean Partnership (WCOP) in Portland, OR.    The RPB meeting is on Wednesday, October 26 and Thursday, October 27.  The WCOP meeting is on Tuesday, October 25. [Working Groups] Outreach Working Group Call – July 6, 2016

The outreach working group met on July 6th.  They discussed the regional stories that will be developed for the RPB and to present at the RPB meeting in October.  They group reviewed existing data resources in the Portal a web-based technology/platform review conducted by the IT Working Group examples of other regions’ stories and related websites Detailed call notes are available here. Esri recently published the second edition of Ocean Solutions, Earth Solutions, a book on the science of protecting oceans and coastlines, with a special emphasis on the role that GIS technology plays in this quest. The book shares the insights of ocean and coastal science researchers exploring ocean components and their relationships, patterns, and trends over time and space. [Working Groups] IT, Data, and Outreach Working Group Calls – April 2016

The IT, Data, and Outreach working groups all conducted their monthly calls during the last week of April. The West Coast RPB recommendations provide a new set of tasks to focus the energy of the working groups.  However, with the recent departure of the Portal coordinator, there has also been a bit of re-grouping. Greetings West Coast Ocean Network, Thanks to the hard work of Todd Hallenbeck, we have finalized a set of recommendations describing how the West Coast Ocean Data Portal plans to provide support to the West Coast Regional Planning Body (RPB). ATRAC: Easy-to-Use, Web-Based Editor for ISO 19115-2 Metadata

We recently tested NOAA’s web-based metadata editor and data archiving tool, ATRAC for developing ISO 19115-2 metadata and found it to be easy to use and able to export a metadata XML file that can be successfully harvested by the West Coast Ocean Data Portal. https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/atrac/index.html It was originally designed for organizations to submit their data to one of the NOAA Data Centers: National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), but it has been modified to allow any user, after Continue reading →
