Todd Hallenbeck wrote a new post, [Working Groups] Data Call – Sept. 25, 2014 9 years, 7 months ago
The Data Working Group met to discuss and provide feedback on the organization and functionality of the existing layers in the data viewer prototype. There were a number of issues that came up related to layer cartography, non-functioning layers (whoops!), and organization in the table of contents. The development team working with Point97 will be addressing some of these issues over the next couple weeks as we prepare for our launch in November. The Data Working Group also discussed providing input on how a new bit of funding from BOEM will be used to develop critical regional datasets to inform West Coast issues like marine planning. Further discussion of these priorities will be a central focus of the Network meeting occurring Nov. 3-4, 2014 in Costa Mesa, CA. If you would like to join the conversation please register today!

Todd Hallenbeck wrote a new post, [Working Groups] Data Call July 23, 2014 9 years, 10 months ago
The Data Working Group met to discuss and finalize a number of important resources the Network will use in upcoming data development projects. One was a finalization of the data prioritization list and the other was a best practice recommendation for projections and coordinate systems. You can read the full call notes here.
The data prioritization exercise sought input from states, feds, tribes, and other West Coast Ocean Data Network partners to reflect the shared needs the region has for addressing a number of ocean health issues, including marine debris, sea level rise, ocean acidification, and marine planning. It recognizes both real data gaps (i.e. no data has been collected) and functional data gaps (i.e. technical barriers to connecting data resources to the WCODP). You can get a sense of the breadth and scope of data needs by examining the list below. Are there any gaps not listed here that you would like to see the West Coast Ocean Data Network address?

Todd Hallenbeck wrote a new post, [Working Groups] Outreach Call July 23, 2014 9 years, 10 months ago
The Outreach Working Group had a short call this week to finalize some communication materials related to our upcoming Network Meeting, the Marine Debris Use Case, and our Network Technical Assistance Survey on the streets now. You can read call notes here.
The Network Meeting is going to be held Nov. 3-4, 2014 in Costa Mesa, CA. The invite letter was sent out the West Coast Ocean Data Network earlier this week after the outreach group had a chance to put some final touches on it. You can register for the event and apply for travel funds at http://westcoastoceandatanetwork.eventbrite.com.
We also had an action item for the group to share the Network Technical Assistance Survey with their colleagues and friends who could use a little help with their metadata, catalogs, or services. The WCODP is helping to provide dedicated resources to helping network partners overcome technical hurdles to connecting to the WCODP – AKA Free Help!! – and we need to solicit partner interest through this survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3M8R5P3. If you have a little pesky data project that you need some free help with, please take a few minutes to fill out the survey.
